In-line with the preamble of the UN Convention on the rights of the Child, SOS Children's Villages believes that the family is a "fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members particularly children".
Therefore, Family Strengthening services are an integral part of our work. We work to strengthen vulnerable families to prevent family breakdown and the separation of children from their families. Where necessary, we collaborate with the state and other stakeholders to provide access to primary healthcare and quality education to support children and families to become self-reliant. We work with the families to ensure that they have sufficient family resources and access essential services as we continue to build their parenting and household management capacity.
Through the Voucher Assistance program and other innovations such as cash transfers, especially during cessation of movements into the community. Since its inception, the Family Strengthening programs have supported 5,261 families/ households, reaching 18,650 children and young persons with quality care, protection and livelihood support.
Cumulatively, the program has empowered families and communities, providing quality care and protection for their children/youth. This is against a backdrop of reduced resilience among families and communities and increased vulnerability to COVID 19 infections, deaths, food insecurity, loss of livelihood, domestic violence and different forms of child abuse, including separation and abandonment.
